B&M Waste Services, a local Carbon Neutral waste management company, joined forces with Onside Youth Zone, The Hive, to celebrate their Eco Week.

Wirral Youth Zone, named by young people as ‘The Hive’, is a purpose-built facility for the city’s young people aged 8 – 19, and up to 25 for those with disabilities. The charity provides young people ‘Somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to’ and enables young people to raise their aspirations and confidence to create a happier and healthier generation.

As part of The Hive’s commitment to becoming more environmentally friendly, they partnered with B&M Waste Services to celebrate a week filled with eco activities! The week’s activities included a visit to B&M’s new Innovation Centre, as well as a litter pick and tree planting day.

The litter pick was completed around the area of The Hive, with members of the youth club working alongside mentors and B&M staff. The litter pick was also supported by Wirral’s very own ‘Little Collector’; eight-year-old Elizabeth Gadsdon, an award-winning local environmentalist.

On the day, trees were also planted within the ground of the Hive, first planted as saplings and will be nurtured until fully grown. The trees were donated to The Hive as part of B&M’s Carbon Neutral commitment, working with local schools and businesses to create improved green space.

Commenting on the partnership, Jayne Kennedy, Marketing Manager at B&M Waste, said: “Having supported The Hive from day one as Patrons, we’ve always been proud of their achievements. This week saw the children really get stuck in and involved in improving the local environment and how they can make a few simple swaps to reduce the waste they produce, particularly when it comes to single use plastic items. They are all so passionate, and want to take practical steps to make a change, something The Hive encourage on a daily basis. It’s been a fantastic week which I’ve loved being part of.”

Head of Youth Work Gill Pleavin said: “Our members are extremely passionate about caring for their environment, and issues such as plastic waste reduction, recycling and sustainability are regularly discussed as part of our Junior, Senior and Hiveability council agenda’s. Here at The Hive we have already seen some positive changes implemented by the young people, such as the removal of plastic straws from our cafe and bottle top collection points for recycling. Eco week was a great opportunity for us to have an environmental focus across all of our sessions, and with the support of B&M Waste we were able to have some unique activities for our members that have made a real impact in and around the Youth Zone.’’
