Bev Craig Event Review | 8th October 2024

During a recent event hosted by Downtown in Business, Manchester City Council Leader, Bev Craig shared updates on the city’s achievements and ongoing financial challenges the local authority faces.

Bev highlighted Manchester’s global recognition as a top destination by Time Magazine and discussed the significance of Aviva Studios, which stands as the largest public arts investment in Europe, reflecting Manchester’s cultural offering which is driving inward investment.

Despite the many positives, Bev highlighted the high levels of child poverty that still exist in the city. She said that it was crucial the next phase of the city’s development was to create more integrated and sustainable communities, pointing to Wythenshawe, which is located near the third largest airport in the UK and is the geographical size of Preston, as one of the areas in which this can be achieved.

Bev was keen to point out in order to achieve this the infrastructure has to be built alongside the housing and not seen as an afterthought by central government, hoping that departments for housing, education and health could all work in collaboration in the future.

The new CEO of Manchester City Council will be announced w/c 14th October.
