Locals back Elland Road tram scheme says West Yorkshire mayor

West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin has backed public calls for a tram link to Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium, highlighting it as part of a wider mass transit plan to boost regional connectivity and economic growth.

There is growing public demand for a tram line serving Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium, according to West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin.

Speaking at UKREiiF in Leeds, Brabin highlighted how the event’s 16,000-strong attendance reflects increased interest in investing in Leeds.

She said the region’s mass transit plans—centered on connecting Bradford and Leeds—will transform travel, enhance public spaces, and stimulate economic growth.

“People see corridors of opportunity and this year we’ve got investable propositions,” she said. “You can actually come shopping with your investment fund and decide where you want to invest.

“Our growth plan has identified transport as the big unlocker for investable propositions. Bringing buses back into public control is an unlocking of opportunity.

She noted that Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently visited Huddersfield to express his support for the tram network, reinforcing government alignment with local ambitions. “The Prime Minister came to Huddersfield a few weeks ago to talk about his support for the tram network. The Government understands that if you want growth, transport is the answer. Everything is aligned to deliver this really ambitious plan around Elland Road.

“This is not just about Leeds to Bradford or Leeds to Dewsbury – this is about the whole of West Yorkshire benefiting. It’s a regional project with national significance,” she added.

The preferred tram route is expected to be confirmed this autumn, with construction starting by 2028 and completion aimed for 2032. Future expansions will build out from the initial connection.

Also speaking on the subject at UKREiiF was Leeds United chief operating officer, Morrie Eisenberg who shared the club’s intention to expand Elland Road, preserving its historic essence while upgrading facilities.

Councillor James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council, praised UKREiiF as a “fantastic platform” to promote the vibrant future of Leeds and the region.
