Murphy’s Gin – A History

Murphy’s Gin comes from modest beginnings. Like many Liverpool natives, their ancestry is traced back to Ireland.

Murphy’s Gin comes from modest beginnings. Like many Liverpool natives, our ancestry is traced back to Ireland. Our great-great grandfather, William Murphy, a young mariner, left Wexford harbour in 1889 with a dream of better life. Fast forward 130 years and four generations later; and three brothers have embarked on a different type of journey – this time with Murphy’s Gin. Murphy’s Distillery & Bar sits proudly opposite Clarence Dock gates – the very same gates through which our ancestors walked all those years ago – Clarence Dock being the main birthing dock for all Irish immigrants coming to the UK from Ireland.

From the early days of 2018, where we began developing and producing our gin in our kitchen at home, we have grown into a highly respected small batch, artisanal distillery supplying exceptional gin and vodka to some of the most highly rated restaurants and bars in the local area, and also now further around the UK. In little over six months since the end of lockdown, we have grown from being a simple gin distillery with a range of three gins, to seven premium gins, a premium vodka, and a popular hospitality venue in which we host various events – including a range of live entertainment, corporate events, gin tasting and cocktail masterclasses.

We are very much an advocate for collaboration and working together with other local businesses. One example of this is the four bespoke gins we have developed and produced in the past few months for several of our clients, and with several more in the pipeline. We also have plans afoot to open a second bar in April on the Wirral, which gives us our first presence outside of Liverpool. It truly is a very exciting time for Murphy’s Gin.
