Labour selects Sheffield City Region mayoral candidate

The current MP for Barnsley Central, Dan Jarvis, has been selected to represent the Labour Party in the upcoming Sheffield City Region Mayoral election.

Labour members in the Yorkshire and Humber CLP were invited to vote for their preferred candidate.

Mr Jarvis was endorsed by several prominent Labourites, including David Blunkett, Ed Miliband and Kevin Barron.

Downtown boss Frank McKenna commented:
“Dan Jarvis is another high profile national politician who is seeing the opportunity of devolution, and potentially having more influence regionally, rather than in Westminster. It is good news for the Sheffield City Region, but a deal that can progress Leeds City Region needs to be in place sooner rather than later.”

The Sheffield City Region mayoral election will take place on 3rd May. Voting is restricted to residents of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. The Liberal Democrat candidate is Hannah Kitching, a businesswoman and campaigner. The Conservative Party is yet to declare their candidate.
