Sutcliffe strengthens Manchester presence with new project wins worth almost £280 Million

Civil and structural engineering firm, Sutcliffe, announces significant expansion in its Manchester operations, securing an impressive £275 million worth of projects in 2024, evidencing its substantial growth and commitment to the region.

Sutcliffe has announced a significant expansion in the Manchester area worth £275m in projects this year.

This year marks 25 years since Sutcliffe established its base in Manchester. Operating from its Deva Centre Salford-based office, Sutcliffe has been at the forefront of transformational regeneration projects across the Greater Manchester region while delivering projects throughout the UK for nearly 40 years.

Recent client wins highlight Sutcliffe’s expertise and dedication to improving the community and quality of life for residents across Manchester as it delivers geotechnical environmental investigations and civil and structural engineering on a variety of social housing schemes including Grey Mare Lane in Beswick for One Manchester Housing Association. Grey Mare Lane is a new neighbourhood delivered as part of Manchester City Council’s masterplan to focus on the needs of both current and new residents, providing a solid foundation for future growth.

In keeping with meeting the needs and aspirations of local people, Sutcliffe is working in partnership with Jigsaw Homes on numerous projects in response to the need for affordable housing. On its Stamford Street scheme in Ashton-under-Lyne Sutcliffe will deliver 35 units available for rent; in Oldham, at its Foundry Street project, Sutcliffe will focus on reducing homelessness through the delivery of 15 one-bedroom apartments which will accommodate young people at risk; and in Ardwick at its Devonshire Street and Coverdale Crescent Project, Sutcliffe is set to work on 24 affordable homes to meet the local housing need as part of the Single Homeless Accommodation Programme (SHAP). This project supported by Brownfield funding will provide an exemplary scheme achieving net zero and EPC A ratings reducing energy bills for its residents.

Marked as a groundbreaking council-led scheme, Sutcliffe is integral in the development of 417 new council and community-based homes forming Salford’s largest council housing scheme for 50 years. Longshaw Drive consists of 177 Passivhaus homes that will be built to high energy efficiency, space and sustainability standards.

Besides many affordable housing projects in the pipeline across Manchester, Sutcliffe has been instrumental in enhancing healthcare infrastructure through the refurbishment and new build of multiple hospitals and extra care facilities. Sutcliffe has recently been appointed to provide geotechnical, civil and structural engineering designs on an extension at Wythenshawe Hospital to extend the existing Medicines Evaluation Unit.

To reduce waiting times, improve diagnosis and increase care capacity across the Wigan borough, Sutcliffe is working with Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver a project at Leigh Infirmary, which consists of a new-build extension involving building a four-storey steel framed extension to the hospital’s Grade II listed façade.

Later this year, Sutcliffe will begin work on an innovative scheme at the University of Salford’s Peel Park Campus, creating a low-carbon flagship building for the new Greater Manchester Institute of Technology, placing emphasis on sustainability and technology in support of the wider campus strategy to be net zero by 2038.

Sean Keyes, CEO at Sutcliffe, said:

“This success comes months after Sutcliffe’s framework success, as we announced our position on CHIC’s eight-year newbuild development framework, PAGABO’s four year Healthcare framework and ICN’s housing framework, all of which affirm our commitment to building more affordable housing and healthcare facilities while driving the redevelopment and regeneration of numerous homes across the North West”.

As Sutcliffe continues to grow and secure new projects across the city, its commitment to delivering engineering excellence remains steadfast. With a focus on sustainable development, and community benefit, Sutcliffe aims to make a lasting impact on Manchester’s landscape and its people.
