Leeds United has officially submitted a planning application to Leeds City Council to increase the capacity of its historic Elland Road stadium to over 50,000 seats. The proposed development would see the stadium grow from its current 37,645 capacity to approximately 53,000, focusing initially on a complete redevelopment of the West Stand, with further outline plans for the North Stand.
The submission follows a comprehensive public consultation held between April and June, which drew feedback from more than 1,800 local residents and fans. According to the club, 98% of respondents supported the overall plans, with 97% in favour of increasing stadium capacity and 99% backing the projected economic benefits for the local community.
A key driver behind the expansion is the high demand for tickets, with over 26,000 supporters currently on the club’s season ticket waiting list. Leeds United says the redevelopment aims to modernise the stadium while respecting its heritage, ensuring it continues to be a vibrant part of the city’s fabric for years to come.
Morrie Eisenberg, Leeds United’s Chief Business Officer, commented that the club was pleased to meet its target for submission. He noted that the 18-month design process had been shaped by extensive feedback and praised the support shown by the community. Eisenberg added that the expansion will not only enhance the matchday experience but also act as a key part of wider regeneration plans for the area.
The application is expected to be reviewed by the council over the coming weeks, with a decision anticipated within 13 weeks. If approved, construction could begin in 2026
