“The North needs to come together”

At the first Downtown Manchester in Business event of 2020, we heard from the CEO of Wigan council, Alison McKenzie-Folan.

“The North needs to come together” was the message from Wigan Council Chief Executive, Alison McKenzie-Folan at the first Downtown Manchester event of 2020.

The event, hosted at The Cast Iron Restaurant at Renaissance Manchester City Centre Hotel, heard from Alison as she discussed how Wigan was exploring their strategic regeneration framework.

“We are focusing on every town in the borough not just Wigan” stated Alison as she explained to the audience that Wigan Councils aim was to think of long term goals as well as short term goals and make sure they work together to ensure the borough can be the best that it can be.

In the 2-hour lunch session, Alison explored a variety of topics including how she believes the whole of the North needs to unite in ensuring that HS2 and Northern rail lines to improve connectivity across the North of England.

“We shouldn’t be forgotten” Alison stated as she expressed her desire to keep the Northern Powerhouse agenda alive.

Downtown Director Chris McKenna commented; “It was amazing to hear from Alison, as she discussed all the great initiatives that Wigan is doing to ensure it is the best that it can be.

Working with artists to help regenerate the culture of the town is just one of the few things they are doing to help improve the culture of the town and that ties in great with the wider plan for the region.

I would like to say a massive thank you to Alison for taking the time to address our members and a big thank you to the Renaissance Manchester City Centre Hotel for hosting us this afternoon.”
