Hundreds of students descended on The City of Liverpool College today to collect their GCSE examination results.
One student, Darcie Thomas, 17 from Rhyl took her GCSE resits at The City of Liverpool College having previously taken them in school and has achieved an overall grade of 8 in English Language which is above her required grade 7. In addition to this Darcie also achieved a double merit in BTEC Performing Arts.
Darcie said:
“When I took my GCSEs for the first time, I was suffering with my mental health and the school environment only increased my anxiety. Feeling like I was being forced to learn was incredibly detrimental and as a result I didn’t get the grades I needed.
“As soon as I started at the college I knew that it was a better environment for me, despite having to travel from Wales. I was able to be far more independent and study on my own terms. Everyone learns differently and for me, the college environment really worked. My tutors have been so supportive throughout my time here and I owe a huge amount to them for pushing me and giving me the motivation I needed to succeed.
“Now that I have the grades I was hoping for, I plan to take my A Levels and go from there – who knows what the future holds!”

We know how important it is to these students that they do well, which is why our team of fantastic tutors are dedicated to providing them with the support and guidance they need, as well as ensuring that they are pushing themselves to the best of their ability.
“Many of our students taking their GCSE resits come to the college feeling demotivated and deflated. It’s our job to lift them up and help them understand that anything is possible – it’s amazing what hard work and determination can achieve.
“As the largest college in the city, we are determined to play our part in providing a vibrant learning environment, to allow us to nurture and develop the skills that this fantastic city needs to continue to grow and be internationally competitive. Whether they’re coming to study for their GCSEs, apprenticeships, NVQs or A-levels, we look forward to welcoming the next cohort of students in September.”
This year’s GCSE results success follows on from The City of Liverpool College being the first in the world to launch a course in the business of Esport earlier this year. The ground-breaking course has been designed to help people build a career in the fast-growing industry, for which revenues are set to exceed £20 billion by 2020.
In addition, The City of Liverpool College has been rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED and was recently awarded the gold standard of Higher Education in the first Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) league table.
