The Calico Group announced today that local Liverpool based architecture practice Brock Carmichael has been chosen to work with Calico Homes to deliver the transformation of derelict Burnley Hospital land into new apartments, with 90 units of extra-care accommodation and an inclusive community hub.
The ambitious development is a first for Burnley; aiming to provide specialist assisted-living accommodation in a neighbourhood setting where health, support services and community activities can come together to improve people’s quality of life and reduce social isolation.
The first phase of the development would include 90 apartments of accessible extra-care homes for local people over 55 with extra support needs, within easy reach of local amenities and the hospital.
Extra care housing comprises self-contained homes with design features and care and support services that help people to remain independent for as long as possible. It can offer many different levels of support, which can be altered as care needs change. Currently there are no dedicated Extracare Schemes in the town.
Wendy Malone, Director of Development for Calico Homes, said:
“I am very pleased to be working with Brock Carmichael on our Burnley hospital development. This is a much-needed project for the town will have a massive impact on people’s lives, providing specialist accommodation for our older generation and apprenticeships for our younger generation too.
“We were particularly impressed by Brock Carmichael’s approach to engagement, and their desire to truly work in partnership with us, our customers and partners. We are confident that they will help us to ensure the design lives up to our vision for these new homes and the wider community they will benefit.”
Michael Cosser, a member of the RIBA, RTPI and the Urban Design Group, and Lead Partner at architects Brock Carmichael for the project said;
“We are excited to be working on the transformation of derelict land at Burnley Hospital into the first state-of-the-art specialist assisted-living apartments, health facilities and community hub for Burnley.
“We bring our experience in medical centres, assisting living, regeneration and place-making to the table knowing how important this project is both to Calico Homes and to the town. This will be another example of how we work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary, public and private sector teams to ensure the project is delivered to time and budget.
“We look forward to helping to deliver this vital project to the town and to improving housing choice, health and wellbeing there with a project everyone can be proud of.”
Plans for the new development will be formally submitted to Burnley Borough Council early in 2021. The project will generate a number of local jobs and apprenticeships over the next few years, as the work takes shape.
