The Calico Group announced today that local Liverpool based architecture practice Brock Carmichael has been chosen to work with Calico Homes to deliver the transformation of derelict Burnley Hospital land into new apartments, with 90 units of extra-care accommodation and an inclusive community hub.
The ambitious development is a first for Burnley; aiming to provide specialist assisted-living accommodation in a neighbourhood setting where health, support services and community activities can come together to improve people’s quality of life and reduce social isolation.
The first phase of the development would include 90 apartments of accessible extra-care homes for local people over 55 with extra support needs, within easy reach of local amenities and the hospital.
Extra care housing comprises self-contained homes with design features and care and support services that help people to remain independent for as long as possible. It can offer many different levels of support, which can be altered as care needs change. Currently there are no dedicated Extracare Schemes in the town.

Plans for the new development will be formally submitted to Burnley Borough Council early in 2021. The project will generate a number of local jobs and apprenticeships over the next few years, as the work takes shape.
