Equality, diversity and inclusion is hugely important to Beever and Struthers, and through this recognition ensures that it can attract and retain the best talent, helping staff to unlock their full potential. The firm is focused on building a strong, inclusive culture that respects every employee, regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation, believing that the contribution of staff is richer because of their diversity and encouraging them to bring their authentic self to work each and every day.

The firm’s champions of EDI which include BLM, BAME and LGBTQ+, disability, mental health and neuro diversity introduced themselves to colleagues and shared their reasons for wanting to get involved and support Beever and Struthers.  The Day of Understanding had a particular focus on Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community which began at sundown on Monday, 12 April and is due to end at sundown on Wednesday, 12 May.

Hemehra Sajid, an assistant manager for internal audit withBeever and Struthers, is organising a ‘fast for a day’ challenge during Ramadan for anyone at the firm wanting to join in. 

Her EDI initiative offers colleagues the choice of a dawn ‘til dusk fast with Muslim colleagues, a fast during working hours which includes not drinking water and abstaining from other daily activities and distractions such as using mobile phones, social media etc. 

Water has a special significance to Muslim communities and with this in mind, we are suggesting that the money that would have been spent by colleagues on food and drink is donated to fund a water project via a justgiving page to  Water Aid – the international non-governmental organisation focused on water, sanitation and hygiene.

Partner Lee Cartwright will join a Kurdish Iraqi refugee in fasting for a day on Wednesday 5th May to raise money via a justgiving page for Restore, a faith-based project of Birmingham Churches Together, working with refugees and asylum seekers in Birmingham, Solihull and Smethwick.  Lee is a volunteer with Restore’s Befriending Service, working with asylum seekers and refugees in the Birmingham area to help them feel welcome, valued and included. He’s pictured here with the Kurdish Iraqi refugee that he’s supporting.
