Plans to build new extra care apartments designed by Brock Carmichael Architects have been approved by Burnley Borough Council.
The derelict plot of land is set to be transformed into 93 high-quality apartments, specially designed to cater to the assisted living requirements of older people while improving quality of life.
The need for extra care accommodation has increased in recent years, as the population ages; housing providers are keen to provide a way for older people to maintain their independence and dignity for as long as possible by developing schemes such as this one.
The £16.6m project will be the first of its kind in Burnley, developed in response to a rising need for accommodation for older people within the community. Proposals include a communal garden, community space, and a bistro – all aiming to bring people together and reduce social isolation.
Housing provider, The Calico Group, have worked closely with architects Brock Carmichael to draw up the plans, along with partners from East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, Burnley Borough Council, the University of Central Lancashire, and Lancashire County Council, who have collaborated with the local community throughout the development process.

Construction is set to begin in summer 2022 by Ring Stones Maintenance and Construction, with completion expected in 2024.
