No one knows this better than Liverpool’s Metro Mayor, Steve Rotheram who has worked consistently to champion business’s and ensure growth and development within the Liverpool City region over his career. Speakers address:

Liverpool’s Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, will share his in-depth insight on the issues and changes happening within the Liverpool City region and how these developments are impacting on the area.

Drawing on his experience of serving on the Liverpool City Council and consulting on contemporary issues including the climate emergency, transport and rough sleeping, he will provide a unique and empowering insight into the support needed for different sectors within the Liverpool region and those living and working within it to thrive in our ever-changing economy.

About the Speaker:

Steven Rotheram was born in 1961 in Kirkby. He left school at the age of 16 and trained to become a bricklayer. Disillusioned by what he saw as the exploitation of employees on British building sites he eventually set up his own company Rotheram Builders at age 22.

After studying for a degree at Liverpool John Moores University, he completed a Master’s in Contemporary Urban Renaissance at Liverpool Hope University, working as a business manager for the Learning and Skills Council for many years after graduating.

In 2002 he was elected to represent Fazakerley for Labour on Liverpool City Council where he served until 2011. He also served as the Lord Mayor of Liverpool from 2008 to 2009 and the MP for Liverpool Walton from 2010 to 2017.

Shortly after becoming an MP, he was elected to serve on the Communities and Local Government Committee and in October 2011, he joined the Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

After working as Jeremy Corbyn’s Parliamentary Private Secretary, Rotheram won a majority vote in the Liverpool City Region mayoral election 2017 and was re-elected in 2021.

During his first months in power he set up the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Improving the region’s transport infrastructure and connectivity had been an important part of his mayoral campaign and became the primary focus of his first term in office.
