The Rolling Stones announce Liverpool legends Echo & The Bunnymen as support act for Anfield Stadium

Opening for The Rolling Stones on the ‘SIXTY’ tour at Anfield Stadium on Thursday, 9 June will be legendary Liverpool band Echo & The Bunnymen.

The Rolling Stones have unveiled the very special guest set to open the upcoming Liverpool show of their brand new European ‘SIXTY’ tour, in celebration of the band’s 60th anniversary. Making their long-awaited return to their home turf of the UK, The Stones’ concert at the home of Liverpool FC, Anfield Stadium, is the band’s first ever stadium show in this city and their first in Liverpool for over fifty years. This will be followed by two shows in London’s BST Hyde Park later this summer.

Opening for The Rolling Stones on the ‘SIXTY’ tour at Anfield Stadium on Thursday, 9 June will be legendary Liverpool band Echo & The Bunnymen. Echo & The Bunnymen’s dark, swirling fusion of post-punk and The Doors/The Velvets-inspired pop psychedelia has brought the group twenty Top 20 hits and nine Top 20 albums in the UK so far in their 40-year existence. The band have come a long way from the group’s infamous first concert as a three-piece with a drum machine in 1979 at the legendary Erics club in Liverpool, still performing sell-out concerts across the world today.

Ian McCulloch from Echo & The Bunnymen said: “Two dreams in one – There’s Nothing Like The Rolling Stones. And There’s Nowhere Like Anfield. I can’t explain how unbelievably happy and proud I am that my band Echo & The Bunnymen are going to be opening up for The Rolling Stones, THE Greatest Rock & Roll band in the History of Time, at Anfield, the Shrine of Life and football…The Rolling Stones!!! And at Anfield!!! I feel honoured and blessed…Thank you God”

The Rolling Stones said: “It’s great to have Echo & The Bunnymen join us as special guests in their home city. We can’t wait to be back on stage in Liverpool! Roll on the summer!”

The Stones just keep on rolling and are back where they belong, out on the road in Europe, playing to packed stadiums, staging a new show and a brand new ‘SIXTY’ production. As you would expect on the band’s 60th anniversary, The Stones, once again joined by Steve Jordan on drums, will be treating fans to a set list like no other, packed full of classics, as well as a selection of unexpected tracks and surprises from their formidable arsenal of songs each night.

The Rolling Stones’ ‘SIXTY’ follows the huge success of the critically acclaimed and highest grossing USA ‘No Filter’ tour, which saw the band play to sold-out stadiums across the States, selling over half a million tickets in the Autumn of 2021.

A four-part series of films, My Life as a Rolling Stone, will air on BBC TV Two and BBC iPlayer this summer. It tells the story of The Rolling Stones in a way that has never been done before – by viewing the band through the musical lens of each member, delving deep into their personalities, passions and memories from the past sixty years. Along with the films, a world exclusive two-hour audio documentary, Rolling With The Stones, will air on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
