On 2nd July 2026, Downtown in Business, in partnership with PLMR, welcomed business leaders, policymakers and stakeholders to Fogo de Chão Birmingham for an engaging Devolution 2.0 lunch, exploring how greater regional powers are driving economic growth across the West Midlands and what the next chapter of devolution could look like.
The discussion featured contributions from Kate Trout, West Midlands Growth Company, and Charlotte Johns, Wolverhampton City Council, who shared their perspectives on how devolution has benefited the region and the opportunities that lie ahead.
A key theme throughout the event was the significant impact devolution has already had on the West Midlands. The panel highlighted how greater local decision-making has helped unlock investment, accelerate regeneration projects, improve transport connectivity, strengthen skills provision and create a more competitive regional economy.
Delegates heard how devolved powers have enabled local leaders to respond more effectively to the needs of businesses and communities, delivering targeted investment and fostering stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors. The discussion also explored the importance of collaboration between local authorities, businesses, universities and investors in maintaining the region’s momentum.
Looking ahead, panellists agreed that further devolution presents a major opportunity to build on the West Midlands’ success. Greater fiscal powers, increased local autonomy and continued collaboration were identified as key factors in ensuring regions can continue to drive economic growth, attract investment and improve outcomes for residents.
The Devolution 2.0 series continues to provide an important platform for bringing together business and political leaders to discuss the policies that will shape the future of the UK’s regions.
