Downtown Manchester in Business recently hosted an online think tank with representatives from recognisable brands from across the Hospitality industry in the city region. The event was put together to help identify the various pinch points for the industry and allow industry professionals to share ideas and practices they have established to manage their unique venues under the new guidance.

The main points from this inaugural discussion where:

  • The disruption caused by the seemingly unscientific 10pm curfew and the impending vote requiring northern hospitality venues to speak with one voice in order to continue to press the government on the issue.
  • The urgent requirement for a practical discussion between property professionals and operators to come up with realistic and critical actions around rental agreements.
  • A united viewpoint on the DCMS guidelines to alleviate some of the uncertainty between venues and bridge the gap caused by the “playing it safe” approach.
  • The need for a financial business support package in the GMCA region similar to that achieved recently in Merseyside.

Also raised during the discussion was the wider implication on the city of missing audiences from sporting events and concerts in the cities various arenas and stadiums and the uncertainty around Christmas and New Years Eve bookings which would normally be complete at this time in the year. Hold your nerve or prepare for the worst? Either way, the festive season has not born fruit so far this year, but will we see a late harvest?
