Sefton Park Palm House

We are delighted that the Sefton Park Palm House is our Venue of the Month for July. The Sefton Park Palm House is a Grade II listed landmark, the crown jewel of Sefton Park and a beautiful example of a Victorian glasshouse.

The Sefton Park Palm House is a Grade II listed landmark, the crown jewel of Sefton Park and a beautiful example of a Victorian glasshouse.

Its impressive botanical collection features over 200 plant species from five continents. Some of these plants are extremely rare, and one is even extinct in the wild.

As a registered charity, the Palm House is a popular visitor attraction that provides free entertainment and a wide variety of community events. It is also available to hire as a unique and picturesque venue.

The Palm House was made possible thanks to Henry Yates Thompson, the eldest son of a prominent Liverpool banking family and the great-nephew of the founder of Princes Park. In 1896, he donated £10,000 to the city to fund its construction. The building was badly damaged during the May 1941 Blitz but was saved by the “Save the Palm House” campaign in 1992.

Since reopening in 1993, the Palm House has continued to thrive. Visitors are invited to explore the space, browse one of the informative browser books to learn more about the plant collection and its history, or speak with the welcoming hosts and volunteers who are always happy to assist.

There is also an on-site café, an ideal spot for a hot drink during a walk through the park. Occasionally, opening hours may vary, so it is recommended to check the Sefton Park Palm House website for the latest updates.
