On Wednesday 21st January 2026 , DIB had the pleasure of hosting a drinks reception at Inside by Meliá Liverpool, in collaboration with The R&A, bringing together partners and stakeholders to discuss the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club.

The discussion examined the substantial economic impact that a global sporting event of this magnitude can deliver for a local economy—particularly when underpinned by a multi-year agreement that facilitates long-term planning, investment, and growth.

Participants also reflected on the central role The R&A plays in the sport of golf, championing positive change to ensure the game is both global and inclusive. Its mission is clear: to open up golf to the world. The Open Championship embodies this mission, creating opportunities, fostering partnerships, and embedding sustainability at the heart of its strategy.

Regardless of one’s interest in golf, the opportunities generated by such an event are significant. The Open serves as a catalyst for collaboration between the public and private sectors, enabling them to maximise benefits and establish a lasting regional legacy.

DIB extends its gratitude to Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Simon Shibli, and Dan Bones for their valuable insights, and to all who joined us for an engaging and insightful evening of discussion.
