Optimism, opportunity, and action were the key themes at an exclusive Leaders Lunch hosted by Downtown in Business in partnership with St Helens Borough Council, held last week (Wednesday 7 May 2025) at the borough’s historic and beautiful Town Hall.
The event brought together over 30 senior private sector leaders from across the property, development, and regeneration industries. Attendees were joined by key representatives from St Helens Council, including Sean Traynor, Director of Strategic Growth, Councillor Richard McCauley, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Growth & Regeneration & Councillor Kate Groucutt, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Business and Inclusive Growth, creating an opportunity for open dialogue between business leaders and decision-makers from the local authority.
The atmosphere in the room was overwhelmingly positive, with many in the private sector praising the council’s proactive and results-driven approach. As one delegate put it: “They just get stuff done.”
Delivering on Promises
Council leaders addressed both the progress and the challenges of the borough’s regeneration journey. Acknowledging that some of the decisions taken have been difficult and, at times, unpopular, but made it clear that bold leadership has been necessary to overcome years of stalled developments and “false dawns.”
Now, with the town centre regeneration well underway, the council is seeing renewed confidence from residents, investors, and developers alike. The physical transformation of key areas is acting as a catalyst for broader economic and social change.
A Borough Open for Business
Discussions also focused on the many investment opportunities available across the borough — from housing and infrastructure to sustainability and skills development. The council was praised for its openness, its willingness to collaborate, and its “can-do” attitude in helping projects progress.
Private Sector Praise
The event was sponsored by Warwick North West. Managing director Greg Johnson shared his enthusiasm following the lunch:
“At Warwick we are passionate about housing, sustainability, skills and jobs and so it was brilliant to see all those topics discussed in such an honest and frank way. Liverpool city region will prosper if the public and private sectors work together in real partnerships, forging collaborations that will accelerate growth. I left the event with a real sense of optimism and positivity.”
Looking Ahead
Downtown in Business Director, Chris McKenna said:
“St Helens is clearly a borough on the move. This event demonstrated a real appetite for partnership and progress. The private sector is ready to invest, and St Helens Council is providing the leadership and direction to make things happen, which is great to hear as a local resident.”
