On Wednesday, April 24th, Downtown in Business brought together public and private sector leaders for a stimulating Birmingham Property Club event at Bank Restaurant and Bar in Birmingham. The event provided a platform for attendees to delve into the challenges and opportunities within the city region, particularly following Downtown’s recent trip to MIPIM, the world’s leading real estate conference.
The highlight of the event was the presence of speaker Philip Nell, Director of Property & Investment at Birmingham City Council. Philip’s extensive career in the private sector, with senior roles at Aviva Investors, Federates Hermes, and LaSalle Investment Management, provided attendees with a wealth of expertise in real estate and investment.
With responsibility for over £15 billion of real estate assets, Philip’s transition to Birmingham City Council in 2023 as Director for Property & Investment signaled a new chapter in his career, focusing on maximizing the city’s real estate and housing development activities.
Having been on the council for 15 months, Philip explained how he wants to change the portfolio they own within the council, deciding what is going to bring in regeneration to the city.
During the discussion, Philip provided updates on Birmingham City Council’s intervention, including the asset disposal program, and offered insights into his new role and initial outlook for the Place Directorate.
He feels that the council need to change their mindset and should be more open and transparent about what is happening within the region.
Discussions centered on the challenges and opportunities facing Birmingham, within the framework of collaboration with the Combined Authority, Central Government, and potential delivery and funding partners. Attendees gained valuable insights into the city’s growth agenda, set to deliver 51,100 new homes, 100,000 new jobs, and £4 billion in infrastructure investment.
Philip and his team’s focus on ensuring inclusive economic growth underscored the importance of property and investment in transforming Birmingham’s landscape. He explained that getting a better understanding of what is truely important to the city provides more opportunity for innovation.
Downtown in Business continues to play a pivotal role in fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and celebrating the achievements of business leaders working across the city’s varied industries.
Downtown Director Chris McKenna commented: “Events like the property club provide a platform for meaningful dialogue and networking in the Birmingham City region.
We’re delighted Philip could join us to share his experiences and we’re incredibly grateful to be able to hold events like this one which truly empower attendees by providing one of a kind insights and connections.”
