Starship constructs the first zero bills modular house in the north of England on Liverpool Waterfront

Specialist low carbon developers and leaders in zero-carbon prefabricated housing, Starship have built a low-energy, zero-carbon, two-storey modular house on the iconic Liverpool waterfront. The zero-bills home is part of Starship’s wider partnership with Octopus Energy and is the first of its kind in the North of England - it will serve as a focal point for the Housing Community Summit this week and will stay in situ through to the three-day Labour Party Conference.

Specialist low carbon developer and leader in zero-carbon prefabricated housing components, Starship, announces the unveiling of a low-energy, zero-carbon, two-storey modular house on the iconic Liverpool waterfront.

The zero-bills home is part of Starship’s wider partnership with Octopus Energy and is the first of its kind in the North of England. This example of a three-bedroom family home shows Starship’s commitment to revolutionising the housing industry with zero-carbon, low-energy-cost solutions, aiming to accelerate the delivery of zero-bills homes.

Built on the edge of one of the world’s most famous skylines, the modular house will be prominently displayed outside the ACC Liverpool and serve as a focal point for the Housing Community Summit on Monday 9th September and will stay in situ through to the three-day Labour Party Conference, which takes place from Sunday 22nd September.

Constructed using innovative offsite construction methods in just one week at Starship’s Wirral based factory and assembled onsite in just two days, the purpose-built house will showcase how the Liverpool City Region aims to be the UK’s centre of excellence for offsite construction of new homes, helping to tackle the housing crisis, provide skilled jobs and represent a significant leap forward in sustainable housing.

Besides acting as a showcase for innovative zero-energy-bill homes, the specially constructed house will serve as a central hub for key parliamentary figures and partners of ‘Future Homes Liverpool City Region’ to coordinate a new approach to housebuilding – an initiative aimed at revolutionising the housing sector.

Dave Dargan, Co-founder and CEO of Starship and founding member of Future Homes Liverpool City Region, said:

“These are exciting and challenging times, where combining innovative construction methods with new technologies, allows us to deliver next generation housing today. Low carbon living has always been part of Starship’s DNA. As one of the key partners of Future Homes Liverpool City Region, we can now showcase the region as a centre of excellence in delivering low-energy and zero bills’ homes. Building at scale and pace we can  provide housing that transforms people’s lives while making a major contribution to tackling the national housing crisis”

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Technical Director at Octopus Energy said:

“Homes without energy bills aren’t a distant dream—they’re a reality. ‘Octopus Zero Bills’ is turbo-charging the green housing revolution, unlocking the power of technology and cheap renewables to deliver no energy bills.

“Our work with Liverpool City Region and Starship demonstrates that zero-bills homes are available now, and aren’t just helping customers eliminate the cost of energy, but making the grid greener and cheaper at the same time.”

As part of Starship’s ongoing partnership with Octopus Energy, Starship will deliver 6 carbon zero homes across its Maple Grove site in Bromborough, Wirral, using a fabric-first approach, prioritising energy efficiency from the start of the design and development process. Notably, these homes will be some of the first zero bills homes in the North, enabling homeowners to live energy bill free for 10 years, guaranteed.

Following the Labour Party Conference, the house will be disassembled and relocated to Starship’s Wirral Waters campus. There, it will function as a prototype for promoting modern methods of construction and for training purposes.

The Housing Community Summit brings together over 2,500 housing professionals, tenants, and policymakers, including Miatta Fahnbulleh MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.
