Liverpool Entrepreneur Kate Stewart launched her annual school uniform initiative last week and within 3 hours reached her £5, 000 and has since managed to raise a further £2,400 bringing the total to an incredible £7,4000 in less than a week! Kate will be using this money to buy children uniforms, school accessories making a difference to hundreds of children across North Liverpool. For years Kate has been passionate about helping families within deprived areas, particularly in her home city of Liverpool, as she remembers only too well the financial struggles and challenges she faced around 24 years ago as a young, single parent.

Kate is concerned about the impact of the current cost of living crisis on families’ finances, especially those struggling to feed their children, let alone buy new school uniforms ahead of the new academic year. Kate comments “It is a rule set out by Central government that every child has to wear a school uniform, but it’s devolved to local government and the board of governors at any given school to decide what that uniform shall be. Many schools are working with just one shop or chain who then has the monopoly on the branded uniform displaying the logo for that school and these items are extremely expensive especially when buying for multiple children. Schools could provide parents with iron-on badges if they want the uniforms to be branded or display school logos, which would be a great way to keep costs down for us all. I  adds unnecessary stress to parent and it’s often the children that are suffering and I cannot be aware of this and not do anything about it.”

This year Kate is keen to engage more local businesses to support the initiative, like hairdressers and food/stationary outlets to donate services and products to help with the whole getting ready for school process of things parents and carers need to do for their children. She hopes to make it more of a ‘fun day ‘ bringing communities together.

‘I have seen so many more people struggling with the rising living costs and knowing children are at risk of being bullied, feeling self conscious and anxious, I am enlisting the support of local businesses in order for me to be able to ensure these children don’t suffer or feel left behind, so if you can support me with this it would be very appreciated.’ Comments Kate.
