Liverpool has an excellent array of restaurants to dine and the independents are thriving in the sector, so it isn’t surprising that hotels can become an afterthought when we decide where to eat, especially when quite a few get their food offering so wrong.

I recently spent a Saturday in Liverpool with the family and having two young children can pose its own challengers when deciding where we eat.

We headed to the Malmaison, beautifully located on the waterfront and surrounded by great views and some exciting regeneration projects. We arrived early for lunch before heading to the Museum and eat from their ‘Good and Bad’ menu which gives you that very option. Do you opt for the healthy option, or tuck into the food which pack in the calories?

I decided on the ‘bad’ and started with the Pan-fried tiger prawns, cherry tomatoes, garlic & red chilli with toasted Altamura bread followed by Chez Mal burger which comes with Ayrshire bacon, Gruyère cheese, burger relish & fries.

My partner opted for the healthier option from the ‘good’ side of the menu and opted for the Tempura of seasonal vegetables, sweet chilli sauce to start followed by Catch of the day, which was Salmon, accompanied with pointed cabbage, broccoli, savoy & lemon dressing.

The kids had a garlic bread each to start and shared a portion of fish goujons leaving room for the all-important ice cream. The food was exceptional and very reasonably priced and a special mention to the staff who looked after us as they were fantastic in keeping the children entertained.

Just as we were leaving the restaurant was filling up and the atmosphere was growing as ‘bottomless brunch’ was about to kick off. Next visit we might have to leave the kids at home and have a drink or three.

I can’t recommend the Mal highly enough. To view the ‘good or bad’ menu click here
