Leading business organisation Downtown in Business has welcomed the Labour government’s newly launched industrial strategy as a “long-overdue reset” for the UK economy – but has called for even greater ambition and urgency in its delivery.
The strategy, which sets out a roadmap for economic growth through clean energy, infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and digital innovation, has been described by Downtown as “a strong starting point” after years of policy inconsistency and underinvestment.
Downtown in Business Chief Executive, Frank McKenna, commented:
“This is the kind of national plan the private sector has been crying out for. It offers clarity, direction, and a long-term vision for economic renewal. The focus on partnership with business, investment in green industries, and empowering regions is particularly welcome.
But we must go further – and faster. If Labour is serious about transforming our economic prospects, it needs to deliver meaningful reform in planning, procurement, and the skills system. Business leaders want less bureaucracy, more devolution, and a seat at the table.”
Downtown praised the strategy’s emphasis on regional growth and the role of cities in delivering national prosperity. The organisation said Labour’s commitment to devolving economic powers and investing in local infrastructure “reflects the reality that growth will come from the bottom up – not the top down.”
However, the business group warned that success would hinge on implementation:
“Words are welcome, but action will be the true test,” McKenna added. “Business is ready to play its part. We now need a government that listens, empowers, and moves at pace. This is a huge opportunity – let’s not waste it.”
Downtown in Business will continue to engage with ministers, mayors, and business leaders to ensure the industrial strategy delivers for cities, communities, and companies across the UK.
