Themis at Burnley College Engineering expertise recognised with prestigious accreditation by The Institute of Welding

The industry expertise and advanced skills of Tutors at Themis at Burnley College have been recognised by The Welding Institute.

The industry expertise and advanced skills of Tutors at Themis at Burnley College have been recognised by The Welding Institute, one of the most highly respected professional bodies within the Engineering sector nationally.

Accreditation by TWI now means that Themis – the Apprenticeship and business training arm of Burnley College –  is one of only a handful of training providers in the North West with the authority to officially train in and examine a wide range of welding standards, vital to ensure safety and maintain the very highest industry standards.

Hannah Cutler, Head of Engineering at Themis at Burnley College, said:

“Our specialist staff within the Welding Division of the Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Excellence have worked tirelessly to reach the rigorous standards demanded by TWI to earn this important accreditation. We are now proud to be able to offer the training and weld tests needed by professionals within this sector and contribute to its continued growth in the North West.

“As a training provider we have invested heavily in expanding our welding provision which is state-of-the-art and industry standard, reflecting the importance of this specialism within the field of Engineering and the demand from leading Employers cross the region for highly-skilled staff.”

Themis at Burnley College is fully compliant with the requirements of CSWTO (Certification Scheme for Welder Training Organisations) and its specialist Tutors are authorised to assess welders’ skills and knowledge in a wide variety of coded welds, using different materials and positions, including ASME1X, ISO 9606-1/2 and BS4872-1/2.

Neil Burrows, Director of Themis at Burnley College, said:

“The role of welders within the Engineering Industry must never be under-estimated: their specialist skills and knowledge are vital to ensure the safety of a diverse range of structures. Whether the welds are integral to the manufacturing or aerospace sector; form part of a massive bridge structure; are vital to the performance of high pressure pipework or even form the infrastructure of oil rigs, they must be welded and tested to the highest integrity.

“Welders must, by law, have their skills regularly assessed to ensure they are performing to the very highest of standards and, by bringing TWI accreditation to Burnley, we hope we have made the process easier for Employers across the region.

“To be a TWI-accredited centre is a huge accolade to the skills, knowledge and industry-expertise of our Tutors and we are delighted to be sharing that specialist knowledge with the wider community.”

As a training provider, Burnley College offers Vocational courses where school leavers can take the first steps towards a career in welding; Themis Apprenticeships with leading Employers in the Engineering sector; Adult Learning opportunities for those looking to expand their skills in welding and commercial courses for those requiring TWI approval.
