Entry opens for this year’s Walk in the Dark

Entry is now open for this year’s Walk in the Dark, Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s annual 11-mile night-time trek along the A6 from Chorley to Preston.

Entry is now open for this year’s Walk in the Dark, Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s annual 11-mile night-time trek along the A6 from Chorley to Preston, which is being sponsored by construction company Eric Wright Group for the fourth consecutive year.

This year’s walk takes place on Saturday, 25th April, from 9 pm. For the first time ever in what will be the charity’s 12th Walk in the Dark, all participants will receive a T-shirt on signing up as well as a goody bag on setting out and a medal on finishing.

Dan Hill, Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s chief officer, said: “Walk in the Dark is the single most important event to us in our yearly fundraising calendar. Last year’s walk raised £50,000 to help us fund our projects to improve the treatment journey of cancer patients throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria.

“We are incredibly grateful to Eric Wright Group for its continued sponsorship, which covers our staging costs. This means that all entry fees and any sponsorship money walkers raise can go directly to helping patients.”

Anyone can take part in Walk in the Dark, which is dog-friendly and follows a largely flat route from Chorley and South Ribble Hospital to Rosemere Cancer Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital. Entry costs £15 with children aged 12 and under able to participate for free when accompanied by an adult. To sign up, log on to www.rosemere.org.uk or telephone 01772 522913.

Walkers are invited to dress up in fancy dress to help give the event a carnival atmosphere. They are also invited to display the names of loved ones they may be walking in memory of. There is no time limit to crossing the finishing line but on finishing, all walkers are greeted with hot drinks and warm bacon or vegetarian barms. Cars can also be left at the Royal Preston Hospital for collection at the finish as there is a free shuttle bus service to take patients from there to the Chorley start.

Jeremy Hartley, Managing Director of Eric Wright Group, said: “We first began supporting Rosemere Cancer Foundation seven years ago sponsoring the Blackburn Cathedral Valentine’s concert and are delighted once again to be involved in Walk in the Dark. As a local company, we are well aware of Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s work to support those in treatment at Rosemere Cancer Centre and all of our region’s hospital cancer units and in recognition of this they were also nominated as one of our Charities of the Year in 2018 with a substantial donation.”

Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring world class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria being treated at the region’s specialist cancer treatment centre, Rosemere Cancer Centre at the Royal Preston Hospital, and at another eight local hospital cancer units across the two counties.

The charity funds cutting edge equipment, research, training and other cancer services and therapies that the NHS is unable to afford. For further information on its work, including how to make a donation, visit www.rosemere.org.uk
