For Krol Corlett, the Carlisle Railway Station project was far more than a refurbishment scheme; it was an opportunity to play a part in the wider regeneration of one of the city’s most important gateways. Working alongside Network Rail at the Grade II* listed Carlisle Citadel Station, our team understood the responsibility that came with protecting a landmark that has served passengers since the 1840s, while also helping to create a modern, welcoming environment for future generations.
One of the project’s biggest challenges was delivering works within a live transport environment. With thousands of passengers continuing to move through the station, careful planning, collaboration and safety management were critical at every stage. Programmes had to be coordinated around operational rail activity, ensuring minimal disruption while maintaining the highest standards of delivery.
Conservation considerations were equally important. Preserving historic features and respecting the station’s architectural heritage required a sensitive approach, balancing restoration with modernisation. The end result demonstrates how thoughtful construction can support regeneration, enhance public spaces and breathe new life into heritage assets at the heart of the community.
