West Midlands Mayor joins DIB for exclusive breakfast forum

Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, joined DIB CEO and Group Chairman to discuss devolution, the upcoming Commonwealth Games and its legacy for the region, and much more.

On Tuesday 12th July, Downtown Birmingham were delighted to be joined by Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street for an exclusive breakfast forum. Andy joined Downtown CEO, Frank McKenna, to discuss several topics including government funding to mayors and devolution, closing the skills gap, transport, the upcoming Commonwealth Games, and more.

Touching on the upcoming Commonwealth Games, Andy discussed its legacy for both Birmingham and the surrounding region with improvements in sporting infrastructure, jobs and skills that will last for life with over 75,000 people having been trained for roles associated with the Games, and vast business legacy attracting inward investors. “The benefit will really show over the next five years”, Andy stated.

Frank McKenna commented, “I always enjoy talking to Andy Street. A fantastic mayor for his region, and so positive that you can’t help but have a spring in your step after speaking to him.

Street is a good example of why we need new devolution deals that give mayors more powers, responsibilities, and the tools to make more of a difference. Look at what he has achieved on transport, skills, and investment with limited powers.”

Following their discussion, Andy was posed with compelling questions from delegates. Speaking candidly about the current commotion in the Conservative party, Andy reiterated the importance of the levelling up agenda and Britain’s exit performance from the EU.
