Downtown in Business recently hosted a fantastic roundtable event centred around ‘A Tale of Two Cities’, looking at regeneration and development across two Northern Powerhouse cities: Liverpool and Manchester. DIB boss Frank McKenna was joined in conversation with Professor Michael Parkinson CBE who shared his expertise and advice with business leaders.
Having written numerous publications on the topic, including ‘Liverpool on the Brink: One City’s Struggles Against Government Cuts’ and ‘Liverpool Beyond the Brink: The Remaking of a Post Imperial City’, Prof. Parkinson shared his wealth of knowledge, giving delegates a whistle-stop tour of Liverpool’s history from imperial superpower to economic decline in latter half of the 20th century.
Michael discussed the vast transformation that both the cities of Liverpool and Manchester have undergone over the last few decades as aspiring European cities. He also cited the work of journalist and author, Andy Spinoza, highlighting key parts from his publication ‘Manchester Unspun: Pop, Property and Power in the Original Modern City’.
Furthermore, Prof. Parkinson was open and honest about his thoughts on the future of the cities and described key challenges for Liverpool’s future in particular. He was, however, optimistic about the city’s new leadership.
